Fishing ban! Threat or boon to fisherman????
Fishing ban is not seen else where, other than so strict in the west coast of India. Due to this fishing ban, most of the fisherman along the coast doesnt venture in the sea. There are advantages as well disadvantages because of this ban on fishery.
The main reason for the ban on the fishery is because to avoid exploitation of the brood stocks that migrate from the offshore to near by coast or even the estuaries for breeding purpose. The ban usually starts during the onset of monsoon from the first week of June to the mid week of August, covering a ban of almost 45 days. The fishing at this moments also fetch small fishes which is not actually a marketable size and there by making the juveniles not to grow. This is more evident during the monsoon fishery where even as small as 12 cm sized oil sardine or mackerel lands to the market.
The fisherman are at a complaint that this is not fair in their part as even some fishes spawn almost through out the season, hence the ban is of no use to the fishery. The Researchers say that actually 40 species of the fishes are spawning during the monsoon months, the favourable conditions during this period help the fishes spawn at this period. Adding to this they have also proven that almost all these 40 species are of commercial importance. Hence the ban is necessary for the survival of stock.
The scientific reasons behind these ban understands us is the importance in keeping the fish stock through out the year. More over the fishing units have increased drastically as compared to few years back. The fishing pressure is so high that it will be very difficult to maintain the fishing trips regularly. The investments for the trip far exceeds the gain through fishing.
The one more important help for the fisherman due to this monsoon fishery ban is from the life threatnings from the nature because of cyclones that will flourish every may end or june first week. Even though this wont be expected by the fishermen as the fishing itself is always a risky business.
